Music video

In the video, a bald Björk (actually wearing a bald cap) is shown from the shoulders up (as seen on the cover of the single). Over the course of the song, she shakes and convulses, and, with the assistance of computer-generated imagery, slowly and unwillingly transforms into an animated polar bear. By the time the video ends, she has shaken off her animal features and become human again before fading back into the white background. The music video was directed by Paul White.

Meaning

According to Björk, the song is about others depending on her:[3]

I guess that song's about when you have a lot of people that work for you and you sort-of have to write songs or people get unemployed, you know? In most cases, it's inspiring but in that particular song I was pissed off with it. I was ready for a break but it didn't seem fair on the people I worked with at the time.

30 Seconds to Mars cover

The song was covered by American rock band 30 Seconds to Mars on the their album A Beautiful Lie. The song was not originally a part of the album, but was recorded and added as a bonus track after the album leaked several months before it was to be released. Stylistically, the song is identical to the original, the only differences being in the second verse, the line "How Scandinavian of me" being changed to "How American of me," and also the line "You just didn't know me" was added. Björk has been known to add the line "You just didn't know me." to live versions of the song as early as the Homogenic tour. The 30 Seconds to Mars cover peaked at number 29 on the Polish Music Charts.[4]
